How can I improve myself as an individual and as a team member?

I’ve been looking at online websites and information about ‘public speaking’ and have been practicing the speech I said at the presentation at home and trying to improve my confidence. As a team member I feel that more communication would be beneficial and there’s always more for more organisational methods. I have realised whilst working within a team my faults, disadvantages and cons not only reflect on my work and development but my team members and it isn’t a nice feeling. You genuinely care about letting down your team and disappointing them. It makes your faults more noticeable to yourself when three other people are pointing it out to you (in a constructive way mostly) Now I feel I have gained more of an understanding of what I need to improve, learning from my team members. I not only want to take action to make improvements but to also not forgot this project management experience but to refer to it.

How the presentation went

I have come away from this presentation experience and know I never want to feel like that again…my phobia of public speaking made an appearance and just depleted my confidence and delivery. My team presented confidently and I feel I have let them down, we discussed this and with the team being positive and supportive they comforted me and suggested practicing in the mirror at home, you might giggle but I’m willing to try anything to improve this much needed skill for my future career.

On a lighter note heres a couple of snaps of our window display proposal

Personal Reflection

During these 8 weeks working as a team The CMYK for the brief Project Management, I feel we have achieved what the brief required, working together to complete all criteria required and surplus design ideas and models to improve The Body Shop’s sales online and in store. I have found working as a team it is very important to communicate often. Key points to remember: Word all suggestions, queries, praise and doubts daily with constant reference to the design brief and client. To be organised is also key to a successful project, allocating every team member with clear, constant roles and updates. It is also important to keep positive attitudes with constructive criticism and lots of problem solving and compromise. We updated and communicated via phone calls, text and Facebook on evenings and holidays, this was vital to the progression of the project as we were able communicate and leave messages with every team member 24/7, also having documented discussions via Facebook private message threads to refer to similar to recorded meetings. I found time saving modern uses of communications very useful and realised how important and versatile an online presence is for promotional campaigns in businesses due to the research I was able to gather regarding precedent studies.

My Final Gift Packaging 3D Models

I used a wide collection of  fun bright colours with lots of interesting textures that would appeal to our target audience. The butterflies are arranged to imitate their fluttering movements.

Packaging adjustments and improvements

I found my initial chrysalis concept for the gift packaging design wasn’t really working; it didn’t look very neat or fold well together if I didn’t use paper rather than card to make the mock model which wasn’t strong enough to hold the products. It’s a shame my attempts at making the chrysalis 3d shape as it links in with our campaign The Butterfly Movement as it represents the second stage in a butterfly’s life. Now I will look at other 3D forms for inspiration for my new gift packaging bag shape, something relating to our campaign, butterflies and natural beauty.

Our Final Presentation Looming….

Our Project Management Plan Presentation is on the 16/01/14 and we need to prepare our presentation style, what order we are going to speak and what props we need. We also need to figure out how to introduce our window display proposal into the presentation that will be displayed by us at our college reception building’s window on site.

My butterfly shapes are layered with various oak leaf pattern designs. I wanted to imitate natural shapes found in the world's flora.

Surface pattern design development

I want to create a pattern design that holds symbolism that promotes healthy self-esteem in young people which they often lack. As we are promoting natural unique beauty it’s natural to me to draw inspirations from the vast beauty of the natural world…butterflies and trees. Trees symbolise many things to many cultures, faiths and religions, Mother Nature is often depicted as a wise, strong, ancient tree. The mother willow in the Disney film Pocahontas is a beautiful entity that individuals go to ask for advice like a spiritual agony aunt her structure like her knowledge and wisdom is strong runs deep into the ground, sores high into the sky.

I like this image as it shows detailed patterns within the patterns of the butterfly wings, I will pursuit work with this idea but in my style.

My Packaging Inspiration, Ethical Research and Plans for Production

During a late last minute Christmas Eve shop in my local Marks and Spencer’s in Hull, England. I was taken by these cute fox packaging designs! I abandoned my Christmas gift list for a while and started snapping away, probably looking rather interested to my fellow shoppers indeed ha! It’s ok! I'm a student! I even had to buy this fella! He was just too good not to take home! I shall be taking a lot of inspiration from these 3D structures!

I love the idea that the image at the back of the transparent bottle and shows through the liquid perfume! It's a really Japanese style cartoon image too! I reckon it appeals to 11 to 19 year olds!

My Body Shop Cosmetics bag.
I visiting my local Body Shop again in Hull to ask about their gift packaging as the internet research isnt really asking my questions. Here's how I got on......Here is a current gift bag from The Body Shop.

Above the body shops main priory is to produce their products as environmentally and ethically possible. Currently all paper based packaging are sourced by their Community Trade Supplier, Get Paper Industry in Kathmandu Nepal. As designers we too have responsibility to follow The Body Shop’s example.

COMMUNITY FAIR TRADE PAPER PRODUCTS FROM NEPAL
Get Paper Industries in Kathmandu hand makes paper gift boxes, wrapping and packing paper, notebooks, gift bags and printed cards. The paper is made by pulping plant fibres with water. The pulp is put on large wooden plates and the water squeezed out. The wet paper is then dried in the sun and cut to size.

THE SUPPLIER
Get Paper Industries has grown from a local business employing about 20 people to an international company with over 90 employees. It also provides seasonal employment for up to 700 workers, mostly women, who might otherwise have few opportunities to work.

THE COMMUNITY
Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. Its gross national income in 2009 was just $440 per capita per annum. In a country where uneducated women in particular have few opportunities, employment at Get Paper Industries helps them provide for their families.

EARTH-FRIENDLY
Get Paper Industries makes its paper from natural and recycled materials like cotton fabric, banana tree stems, water hyacinth and jute. It also uses non-toxic dyes and has its own water treatment plant to treat its waste water.
AN EDUCATION
Get Paper Industries set up its own charitable organisation, General Welfare Pratisthan, which runs health, environmental and education projects for the community. Get Paper Industries and General Welfare Pratisthan support seven schools around Kathmandu, funding things like annual scholarships, schoolbooks and teachers' salaries.

GIRL POWER
Get Paper Industries employs more women than men. Female workers are paid the same rate as men for the same labour, unusual in a country where men are traditionally paid more. Now that these women are being helped to provide for their families, their status in the community is being raised.

MY WASTE RECYCLE IDEA

we would like to propose a cardboard/paper waste collection, recycle, return cycle (CRRC) within The Body Shop stores to produce some of their gift packaging as all of their customer paper bags are 100% recycled and printed with water based inks which are easier to recycle along with being more environmentally friendly. Organising new business agreements with current sustainable, community trade, recycling, waste collection companies and organisations would be our next step in order to clarify if the move would be beneficial to all parties and issues concerned including the Get Paper industries employees who currently produce all The Body Shop’s paper based packaging and gift tags. The pulp is put on large wooden plates and the water squeezed out. The wet paper is then dried in the sun and cut to size.

Our Final Campaign Poster

Butterflies represent transition, unique beauty, diversity, unity with the ability to fly. These butterflies are layered with oak leaves, a tree species that holds symbolism of bravery and empowerment which every young person should have in their lives and sometimes lack. I wanted to display these meanings and symbolism within my designs by using diverse mark making and mixed media to make each butterfly unique with patterns symbolising bravery and power

Christmas Break Meeting 2nd January

First of all,  HAAAPPPY NEW YEAR! Now down to business, after our meeting today we have clarified our final plans, dealt with issues such as problems with copyright butterfly images and logos within our campaign poster proposal by deciding to remove the logos and for me the team illustrator to draw a butterfly template with a surface pattern design for the campaign poster.

I also presented to the team the mock 3D models for my gift bag packaging designs and discussed improvements and decided which model was variable and most suited to appeal to our target audience (11 to 19 year olds)

I decided to create a tree shaped gift bag so it links with our four product posters tree theme promoting natural beauty, it also creates a home for the butterflies to meet and social representing our young customers within our Facebook page: the butterfly movement.

My next step to start making the revised gift bag model out of card all nice and neat with my illustrations decorating it. The bottom half of the gift bag will have my tree bark pattern on it and the top half of the gift bag will display green tree top with our campaign butterfly mascots upon it which links with our The Butterfly Movement. I think we are on our way to producing a really fun, meaningful campaign project for The Body Shop through the D & AD New Blood Competition.
